#RockSolidHistory from Herkimer Diamond Mines in Herkimer, NY!
What is a Herkimer diamond, you ask? Well, it is a super clear quartz crystal that literally grows inside of rocks here at the mine. For a little money, you can pay to enter, get a hammer, and spend all day cracking rocks open to find them. It is also a great way to blow off steam. This mine has operated both informally and formally since 1955. It began as a farming field where a fee was paid by the honor system to look around and dig. Today, it is owned by the Scialdo family. There is a lot to do there - look for fossils, shop, eat, make jewelry, even camp in luxury. I noticed the Fluorescent room and wondered - do they have Franklinite from Franklin, NJ? They do indeed! Small world. #Herkimerdiamondmines #Herkimerhistory #NYhistory #Herkimerdiamonds #Franklinite #NYgeologytrip #NYhistoryforkids #adayinthemines #lovegeologyandhistory #childrensbookauthoress #Iloveshinyrocks #prettyquartzcrystals
