A Mortar for Mortals

Here you see a bedrock mortar, which is a hole that was formed in the granite rock over time, due to the grinding of seeds into flour by local Cahuilla peoples. It’s like a large mortar and pestle. Mesquite seeds were especially prized a certain time of year.

​This ancient treasure is just sitting out in the open. Many exist across the Southwest. Be sure to keep your eyes open or you’ll miss them!
