#RockSolidHistory from the Obsidian Butte by the Salton Sea in California!
This other-worldly place looks straight out of a Star Wars movie and smells like the Jersey shore. Obsidian is a black shiny rock formed by volcanoes. The place is covered with it, in small shards and big wispy hills. It is estimated the obsidian was formed 8,000 years ago. The Salton Sea covers some of it. The Salton Sea was man-made in 1905, to help irrigate nearby crops, but it is shrinking. Set next to the San Andreas Fault, the state of California today is harnessing geothermal steam to power turbines and generate electricity right next to this site. Otherworldly indeed! #ObsidianButte #SaltonSea #ImperialValleyCA #Geothermalenergy #historyofobsidian #historyforkids #naturalhistoryCA

#RockSolidHistory from The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, NY!
I remember coming here as an elementary school student, and being whisked through the Ancient Egypt and Medieval armor exhibits. But there is SO much more. Paintings, some of the most recognized of George Washington, are hung here. There is also a cool instruments exhibit with things from around the world, both new and ancient. Asian exhibits show some very exquisite and precious art. You could easily spend a day, or two, here! #TheMET #NYhistory #NYChistory #MetropolitanMuseumofArt #ArtHistory #ArtisHistory #GetOutsideNY #historyforkids #historyiseverywhere Unfortunately tomorrow's Passaic County Book Festival is canceled due to forecast rain. Hope to see you all another time.
#RockSolidHistory from Mountain Springs Station, CA!
From 1862-1870, Peter Larkin and Joe Stancliff built a stone house about a mile north of this site and used it as a store for ox teams. Later, the San Diego and Fort Yuma Turnpike Co. used the site as a toll road station until 1876. Today there is the Desert View Tower (built in 1922 by Bert Vaughn) with a tourist store, along with AirBnB houses, and Boulder Park (an artist’s creation, Merle Ratcliff, during the Great Depression) on the grounds. From the tower, you can see Mexico! It is a wild and funky place you just cannot miss if you are in the area. #DesertViewTowerCA #MountainSpringsStationCA #MerleRatcliffart #BoulderParkCA #ImperialValley #CaliforniaHistory #ImperialValleyHistory #SanDiegoVicinity #RockSolidHistory from Sea Bright, NJ!
What you see here is the old but very important stone wall that is designed to help protect this low-lying community from storms and ocean surge. It also helps to support the boardwalk. On the other side is the Sea Bright Ocean Rescue. They were training on this fine day in May. #oceanlifenj #seabrightnj #seabrighthistory #localhistoryNJ #historyiseverywhere #historydetective #MonmouthCountyhistory #historyforkids #GardenStateHistory #seabrightoceanrescue #RockSolidHistory from Lake Topanemus Freehold, NJ!
This beautiful and spacious park was perfect for my father to walk, as it has mostly even ground. This land was formerly Forman's Mill in the 1800s. Today it has a small reflection garden dedicated to Jean DeCicco-Levine, who was instrumental in creating this park. It overlooks the lovely lake, which is currently chock full of lilypads. I looked for frogs, but it was a little chilly for them. #exploreNJ #GetOutdoorsNJ #localhistoryNJ #historyiseverywhere #historydetective #MonmouthCountyhistory #Freeholdhistory #historyforkids #GardenStateHistory Helllooo everyone! It's been a minute. I'm here to announce I will be attending the Passaic County Book Festival again on Saturday June 14 at Weasel Brook Park in Clifton, NJ.
It's the day before Father's Day. You should check out all the great things for dad! If you can stay longer, check out the panels. I will be part of one about local history with Michael Gabriele.
