#RockSolidHistory from the Russian History Museum in Jordanville, NY!

Hello my fine readers! This quiet and religious community is tucked away in the middle of New York and has a vast number of resources specifically about Russian history, royal jewelry, and the American immigrant experience.

I need information on these to write the second and third parts of my YA historical fiction trilogy accurately.

Library director Andrey Lyubimov has been incredibly kind and helpful. Reach out to him if you have similar research!

It is also a lovely area filled with lakes and is near Cooperstown.

The Power of Peer Review

#RockSolidHistory from my desk!

There is something a lot of writers don’t talk about – our community. If you think I exist alone in my writing endeavors, you are wrong! I have surrounded myself with smart and creative readers and writers. It makes me better at what I do.

The biggest help lately has been a writing group I was a part of in 2021 and recently rejoined. Because I am at the start of writing the second part of a YA historical fiction trilogy, it is very important to have peer review.

I want to make sure my instincts for telling a story are correct. If not, I will adjust. Writing is one part idea, three billion parts reviewing and revising. Doing all that in a bubble doesn’t help the story get told well. Help/support is welcome and needed.
So I’m giving a huge thanks my writing group!

Happy book birthday!

Happy 8th book birthday to me!

I just wanted to thank the many readers and supporters of my book “A Rock Solid History of Hawthorne, New Jersey.” YOU have made my passion project come true. There is nothing better than hearing from satisfied readers who thoroughly enjoyed the book and now look for history wherever they go.

Give a shout out if you have had this experience!

The idea for the book was born in 2012. I started to gather research, but life got in the way as I bounced from job to job as the Great Recession continued to ripple.
Once I landed on my feet, I pushed myself to finish.

I’m actually doing the same thing this summer for my next book. This one will be a historical fiction, and oh is it fascinating and true! I’m currently writing the last two chapters. 😊

Perhaps I’ll share some excerpts soon…what do you think?

A Mountain of Art...

#RockSolidHistory from Salvation Mountain in Niland, CA.

This colorful and Christian monument was divined by artist Leonard Knight in 1984. He basically poured concrete over a large hill, painted it in vivid colors and designs, used found materials like tires and windows, and made it a shrine to his God. And yes, you can climb it!

It has been designated as a “folk art site worthy of preservation” by the Folk Art Society of America.

The mountain is not the only things Leonard touched. There are other pieces of art scattered around the site.

Leonard Knight passed away in 2014 at the age of 83.

When the world was just 4 continents...

#RockSolidHistory from Skylands Manor and NJ Botanical Gardens in Ringwood, NJ!

Pictured here are the Four Continents Statues. Each represents the way old Europe classified the world, which included Africa, America, Asia, and Europe.

The artist is unknown, but the statues are imitations of those made by Gaspard Marsy, Gilles Guerin, Cornu, and Mazeline, according to the Smithsonian. These imitation statues were installed in 1930.

Although weathered after 95 years, they still look beautiful.

An Imperial Valley Desert Gem

#RockSolidHistory from Imperial Valley Desert Museum in Ocotillo, CA!

This museum perfectly, and wondrously, captures this unique part of southern California.

From indoor displays of former marine life, human-induced land changes, clay vessels, and wildlife, to an outdoor art and informational trail, this museum has a little something for everyone.

Pictured here are:
  • The entrance
  • Ocotillo Observatory – an equinox aligned site to connect humans to the sky
  • The earth history of the Coyote Mountains
  • Spirit of the Desert sculpture - by Carroll Barnnes and a gift from the Quechan people
  • Marine fossils and geodes
These are just a few nuggets. There is a lot more. If you are ever near El Centro, be sure to check this museum out.

Tarrytown tidbits for the 4th of July

#RockSolidHistory from Tarrytown, NY and Happy Fourth of July!

Tarrytown saw a lot of nefarious action during the American Revolution, including the capture of British spy John André and the site where American General Benedict Arnold's treason was discovered.

Perhaps if these things had not happened, the outcome of the war would’ve been different!

Pictured here is a statue that is not about the Revolution. Instead, it honors the many local people who died in World War I.

Why the flag was at half-mast that day in late January, I do not know. Wish I did.

I just really liked the American flag imagery here and wanted to share. Have a wonderful and safe Fourth of July to my American friends.
