#RockSolidHistory from Barre, VT, where you can find North America's longest zipper!
This zipper is made of granite and is a sculpture in front of Studio Place Arts on Main Street. Created by Chris Miller, the "Unzipping the Earth" sculpture is 74 feet long and features a perennial garden. There are many stone art installations near there, each representing something intimately local - such industry, people, book characters, etc. (Check out info here: https://www.studioplacearts.com/art-stroll.html) If you don't know, Vermont supplies granite for many cemetery stones and statues across the United States. Carvers from Italy originally settled here. #BarreArtStroll #Barrezipper #artistChrisMiller #NorthAmericasLongestZipper #WeirdVermont #Wherehistoryandartmeet #ItalianheritageinUS #Barreart #Vermonthistory #historyforkids #historydetective #historyiseverywhere #childrensbookauthoress

#RockSolidHistory from Herkimer Diamond Mines in Herkimer, NY!
What is a Herkimer diamond, you ask? Well, it is a super clear quartz crystal that literally grows inside of rocks here at the mine. For a little money, you can pay to enter, get a hammer, and spend all day cracking rocks open to find them. It is also a great way to blow off steam. This mine has operated both informally and formally since 1955. It began as a farming field where a fee was paid by the honor system to look around and dig. Today, it is owned by the Scialdo family. There is a lot to do there - look for fossils, shop, eat, make jewelry, even camp in luxury. I noticed the Fluorescent room and wondered - do they have Franklinite from Franklin, NJ? They do indeed! Small world. #Herkimerdiamondmines #Herkimerhistory #NYhistory #Herkimerdiamonds #Franklinite #NYgeologytrip #NYhistoryforkids #adayinthemines #lovegeologyandhistory #childrensbookauthoress #Iloveshinyrocks #prettyquartzcrystals #RockSolidHistory from Whitehall, NY, a place where Bigfoot is protected from hunting. Yes, you heard me right. Bigfoot. Sasquatch. Yeti. Whatever name you prefer.
Why is that so in Whitehall? Well, according to locals, sightings of the elusive creature in this Adirondack town go back for centuries at least. Native Americans told tales of Bigfoot, and to this day, people have seen them and heard their calls. Pictured here is a roadside statue by a Bigfoot-themed souvenir store. In 2004, Whitehall passed a law that hunting Bigfoot is illegal. They are so beloved, there is a Sasquatch Festival every September in Whitehall. Do you believe...? #bigfootlore #sasquatchfestival #adirondacksbigfoot #whitehallny #NYfolkhistory #NYhistory #adirondackhistory #historyforkids #childrensbookauthor #whitehallsasquatch Sorry to disappoint, but the event on August 7 was canceled due to low sign ups. The Friends of the Library will likely reschedule at a later date.
