Just a quick reminder that I will be speaking at the Long Branch Arts & Cultural Center this Wednesday evening, Oct 30. This is a riveting story of a real Italian family who was part of the cultural fabric of Long Branch when it was part of what people called the "golden coast." See you at 6pm!

#RockSolidHistory from Hershfield Park in Pompton Lakes, NJ!
This tiny but chock full park has a small trail that meanders along the Wanaque River, as well as a dog park, sports fields, tennis courts, playground, and snack bar. The wooded area has remnants of past structures and neat boulders with sedimentary rock layers. Henry Grah Hershfield was Mayor of Pompton Lakes starting in 1909 for four consecutive terms. This park was dedicated to him in 1939. He passed away two years prior. Hershfield was a Spanish American War veteran. #pomptonlakeshistory #hershfieldpark #HenryGrahHershfield #PomponLakesfootbridge #localgeologyNJ #NJhistory #Historyiseverywhere #GetOutdoorsNJ #GardenStateHistory #RockSolidHistory from Larry Doby Baseball Field in Eastside Park in Paterson, NJ!
Larry Doby is remembered all throughout Paterson. He played for both the Negro Leagues and the Major Leagues in the 1940s and 1950s. He was the first African-American man to play in the American Baseball League. He was also the first African-American to hit a home run in the World Series. There is this nice statue of Larry near the baseball diamond. #larrydobyhistory #maericanbaseballleaguehistory #negroleaguehistory #Patersonhistory #NJhistory #GardenStateHIstory #NJbaseballhistory #larrydobystatue #Eastsideparkpaterson Save the date! I'll be down by the shore where I grew up on October 30th. Hope to see you there.

Here you see myself and the President of the Friends of the Louis Bay 2nd Library, Kerrie Beekman, presenting me with a raffle gift. Folks, I NEVER win raffles. So this was AMAZING! The FOL recently held a book sale for teachers and I shopped away to fill my classroom library. Proceeds from their book sales go right back into the community - holding wonderful programs, giving out scholarships, and sponsoring magazines for the library. Be sure to check out their book sale area - it is quite large. #lb2library #follouisbay2ndlibrary #Lousbay2ndlibraryfriends #booksaleforgood #hawthornenjhappenings #lovemynjtown #teacherlove |
