#Caturday for the cat lovers!

​#RockSolidHistory and happy #Caturday from the Getty Villa Museum in #Malibu, CA!

This massive collection of ancient art, dating back 7,000 years and housed in Romanesque buildings, was the brainchild of oil tycoon Paul Getty.

I took a particular interest in all the cat sculptures from Ancient Greece, Rome, Etruria and Egypt.

• Notice how big cats were often featured in handles and spouts?
• Notice how big cats became part of mythical creatures like griffins and sphynxes?
• Did these civilizations tame wild creatures, or just revere them? I wonder…
