History of lake is gushing with factoids

Situated at 4,613 feet above sea level in the mountains of #SouthernCali, it boasts a scenic campground, a trout-filled lake, and hiking through pine forests.

This lake, which is actually a reservoir, was created in 1886 by damming a creek to hold water for the city of San Diego. The San Diego Flume Company build an earthen dam and lots of wooden flumes (using 9 million feet of redwood!) to carry water to the city.

The lake dried up in the 1940s and it wasn’t until the 1960s that the Lake Cuyamaca Recreation and Park District was formed to create a more permanent infrastructure at the lake, including the reshaping the lake into two parts and making one side deeper and more drought-resistant.

The lake still provides water to the city of San Diego!
