The "storms" that inspired youngsters

Here we have the Sand Lot Kid sculpture, by Victor Salvatore, in front of historic Doubleday Field. This bronzed farmer boy captures the tradition in early baseball of “barnstorming,” where baseball greats (like Babe Ruth, Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson) traveled to various cities to play games, often on small farm fields, in the early 1900s during the off-season. It inspired a generation of future ball players.
This statue was installed in Cooperstown in 1939.

Interestingly the artist, Victor Salvatore, was married to Ellen Ryerson, whose parents and siblings were on the Titanic, but not her. She lost her father Arthur in that sinking tragedy in 1912.
